It Only Took A Year! – A Review of Nerd Fitness Academy!

Hey all! Shorty here!

We promised this a year ago, and now it’s (finally) here! A standalone review of Nerd Fitness Academy!

This review will be just Shorty today, as Kendra is a bit tired from work and some new projects she’s plotting.

To start, let me just say that we love the Academy. Let me also say: none of my reviews are sponsored. We’re too small-time to get sponsored at this point. We review only what we’ve used or experienced and liked.

Now, the Academy is an amazing resource. You complete quests to gain experience and level up, just like in a video game. The difference is that you the player are leveling up, not some pixels on a screen.

With permission from the team, I’m including some screenshots from the site. Let’s start with the landing page, to give you a feel for how clean and easy to navigate the academy is.

You’ll see there’s a couple of navigation methods, and a welcome video to help you get into things. Along the top, you’ll see the labels “Start Here”, “Mindset”, “Nutrition”, etc. That’s on every page, so even if you don’t have the sidebar on the right, you can get wherever you need to go.

You’ll also see, in the top right, my character’s summary. It gives you your class symbol, your current level and experience, and your “Epic Quest” level. I’ll explain Epic Quests in a bit.

For now, let’s move to the sidebar navigation. It’s context dependent, and has links to all the main sections from the start page. Once you’re in the modules, it links to the other quests in the module.

Let’s take a look at one of the module screens next.

Here, you can see the “Mindset” module landing page.

This is part of the great thing about the Academy: Nerd Fitness does not just focus on exercising, or even just diet and exercise. No, they go straight to the heart of the matter and teach you how to make the habits you build stick.

That’s the reason a lot of diets fail- You get the short term success you’re looking for, but you aren’t building healthy, lasting habits that will stick with you for the long run.

You’ll notice this is “Module 1.” That’s how much importance Nerd Fitness Academy puts on Mindset. If you look at the sidebar navigation, you start to get a feel for what kinds of things you’re going to be looking at in this module. Setting good goals, finding objective ways to measure your progress that aren’t just numbers on the scale, and setting up your environment for success are just some of the things you’ll learn here.

And if you struggle and fall off the wagon? It’s simple to go back in and pick up where you fell off.

Now, on to Module 2: Nutrition.

Nutrition is, of course, a good chunk of losing weight or even just being healthier. They say you are what you eat, but that’s more true than you think. If all you’re eating, all the time, is food that has little to no nutritional value, you’re not getting what your body needs and you’re going to feel pretty miserable.

I should know, that’s where I was when I started with Nerd Fitness.

Now, Nerd Fitness isn’t about just picking a diet and going. Sure, you can do that, you can count calories, you can eliminate certain things entirely. They won’t tell you that’s wrong, since it does work if done correctly. However, you will learn that you don’t have to completely give up your favorite foods or drinks and be miserable.

Instead, you’ll start by simply seeing what you’re eating and how much of it. You’ll learn not to count calories, but to simply note what’s entering your system. From there, you’ll see if you’re mostly eating non-nutritious foods, and what you might replace them with.

Other quests in this module will help you learn how to meal prep, how to create healthier meals and snacks, and how to handle portions.

Of course, nutrition and mindset, while being a large part of getting healthier, aren’t the only things people are looking for.

To start figuring out what you need to do for exercises, the academy will ask you to start with a benchmark test:

Take note in the instructions about “good form.” Learning to exercise is great, but doing it with good form is important to not getting hurt.

Past that, you’ll just do the exercises it suggests. If you aren’t sure what’s meant or what good form is, there’s a short video for each exercise that you can watch to learn from.

If you can do the exercise with good form for the amount of reps suggested, you’ll hit “Yes” and a new exercise will be listed. If not, you’ll hit “No” and move down to the next option.

This will help you find out about where you are on your fitness journey, and allow you to pick a pre-built workout that will help you build yourself while still giving you enough challenge to know when you’re growing.

After a time, you’ll try a “Boss Battle” that will tell you if you’re ready to move up a level in your workouts.

The Academy also has scaled versions of pretty much every exercise they suggest. There’s also “Bodyweight” exercises versus “Gym” exercises- Exercises that use just your body and maybe one or two outside bits of equipment that you’ll likely just have laying around (like a chair or something to step up on) versus exercises where you’ll want dumbbells, kettlebells, and other exercise specific equipment. Personally, I prefer “Bodyweight” since I don’t have a ton of excess money for gym memberships right now.

Now, if you want a list of all of the quests offered by the Academy, you can find them under the big “Quests” button on the top navigation bar. That will bring you here:

As you see, it will tell you which module the quest belongs to, and how much experience it’s worth. You can click on the quest to get more details, along with a link to the full quest page. Once you’ve completed a quest, you can click the large exclamation point to mark it complete and receive the experience for it.

Naturally, as you receive experience, your character levels up. If you want to see more about your character, you can click on your name in the character summary at the top, and that will bring you here:

I will not apologize for the cheesiness of my page, and you can’t make me.

In all seriousness, though, this is one of the best things about Nerd Fitness. You get so much out of your time and money, and it’s all there to help you turn your fitness adventure into a real world video game.

Let me explain a bit about the classes now. There are several classes to Nerd Fitness, based around what you’re looking to get out of your fitness adventure. I won’t take the time to explain them all here, since Nerd Fitness actually has a full page to explain them themselves. You can find those descriptions, along with examples of who would fit in those classes, here.

As you’ll see, I chose “Assassin” for my class, and that’s because my goals are basically those of move quickly and efficiently. If you click the “Quests” navigation option on the left, you can see more quests than just those of the academy’s and filter them down by what class you’re working on at the time. Naturally, if your goals change, you can change your class. The little character picture there is also something you can change.

Your “Epic Quests” are huge goals for your life. The Mindset module will help you with setting these, but I’ll give you an example of mine. I want to be conversationally fluent in Japanese, so I’ve set my Epic Quest in line with that. I’ve given myself a deadline (that I’ve missed by a mile, so I need to revisit my quests and reset myself if I still want to accomplish that) so that it’s not just a hazy “someday,” but something I can objectively say I finished or did not finish.

This is already getting a bit long, but I hope you can see the value of Nerd Fitness Academy through all of this. I’ve given you just a taste of what is offered, as there’s also a thriving community that you can reach out to for help if you’re struggling or don’t understand something, or if you just need someone to keep you accountable.

To go hand in hand with my review of Nerd Fitness as a whole last year, it’s an amazing resource that I find well worth the money. While Nerd Fitness does have free resources, the Academy isn’t one of them. When I got the Academy, there was a payment plan option at least to make it easier to afford until you’d paid it off, but I don’t know how that’s changed since the introduction of Nerd Fitness Prime, which does include the Academy along with the other three standalone Nerd Fitness courses.

I actually don’t know if Academy is still sold separately or not, but that’s something that you can find out if you’re only looking for the Academy. I personally do love Nerd Fitness Prime at the moment, but I’m not sure how long I’ll have it as I was given access as a “temporary” measure as it got started. I still have access to everything for Prime, but for all I know, that could end at some point if I don’t pay for the subscription at that time.

But, I know the Nerd Fitness team will give ample warning if that’s the case, and I’ll be able to get my reviews of the other courses out before then if that happens. So, stay tuned for my reviews of more of Nerd Fitness’s offerings!

Media Review, But A Little Different This Time!

Hey, all! It’s Shorty! Back with another media review.

This time, we’re doing something a little different. Normally, I try to review things that I feel are beneficial in some way- Knowledge, fitness, mental health, what have you. Today, I’m reviewing something that we just plain love, and one of the several inspirations for Life Is Super!

Today, we’re talking about the Webtoon comic Kitty Kitty Bang Bang! It is an absolute masterpiece of a story. We follow Kit, a girl fighting crime. Legally, might I add, as part of a sort of bounty force called the Bounty Killers.

Now, I don’t want to get into too many specifics here, because I really don’t want to spoil any of the magic, but I will say that the dialogue is witty and charming, but also knows how to get serious. It’s a great crime fighting story, and takes partial inspiration for the Collectors from Life Is Super. You’ll see why it’s partial inspiration later, I promise.

It also inspired the style of Life Is Super, and the desire to make a comic rather than a regular story. If Kendra learns to draw, or we find an artist that’s willing to go in on the project for a portion of anything we make, then we’ll still make it a comic. (And probably put it on the same app as Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, to be honest.)

Now, the art for the comic… Absolutely on point. The style has evolved a little as the creator’s continued to make the comic, but in a great way. The shading and line art are absolutely amazing! And we’re just starting a new… Arc? Chapter? I’m not sure how the creator, Evan Moe on the app, wants to refer to it.

The fan community is also pretty fun. In the comments, you’ll find jokes, laughter, and… Puns. I warn you now, there are puns, and Kendra is Punmaster General. Just… Be prepared. And Evan definately encourages the puns, as seen by replies to comments.

The comic gets updated fairly often, unless Evan’s got something going on or just has writer’s block, but there’s no fast pass option. That’s not a drawback, though, because Evan manages to get new episodes up on a near daily basis most of the time, and lets us know if something’s going on. (Moving has been one recently, and no one can fault that!)

If you need a fun read with brilliant writing, a Randy “Macho Man” Savage meets Kool-Aid Man insane part-time villian, and amazing art and characters, definitely check this one out! You can find it on Webtoons, as I said earlier, and trust me: It is worth taking the time to catch up!

An Amazing Media Library – The Great Courses

To preface this post, I feel it’s necessary I state that we are not sponsored by The Great Courses (or Audible, as they’ll be mentioned) for this post, or any previous posts. Though, I will say, if either one wanted to sponsor us with, say, a free month or something of their services… We wouldn’t object!

For a while now, Kendra and I have been listening to Audible. It’s an easy way to reconnect with books we enjoy when we don’t have time to listen. Some of the performances are even better than we pictured the characters sounding like!

But this isn’t a post about Audible. (Perhaps I should do one, though… Hm…) No, this is a post about what we found through Audible: The Great Courses library.

We started our journey on The Great Courses with a book about language. Specifically, The Story of Human Language as instructed by John McWhorter and presented by The Great Courses.

It was amazing! There was so much to learn, and it created a budding love of linguistics in Kendra. (She would go back to college for linguistics if she could afford it right now.) The courses was taught in a fun, enjoyable, and yet enlightening way. Instead of chapters, the “book” was broken up into lectures. There was also a PDF included that went over material from the lecture, so one could follow along with the information. The PDF isn’t a transcript, and Professor McWhorter adds so much character to the words on the page that you really have to listen to him as well.

We have since listened to courses on the history of secret societies, mythologies of the world, history courses such as one about powerful women of ancient/medieval times and a more general medival history course, more linguistics courses, a course on law school made for everyone, and medical history courses such as a course on the black plague. I’m sure there’s more that I’ve forgotten, since we’ve been listening to and/or watching a lot of these courses.

Yes, I said watching. After a few courses, we just had to find how we could watch these, as the video forms were referenced in several of the courses. It turns out, instead of just buying dvds of the lectures, The Great Courses offers them to purchase individually, digitally, to watch on any device you own… Or you can do a subscription plan and have access to their entire library!

As the library itself will say on the Audible version, in my own words, just imagine how much you’ll learn if you just listen to a little at a time. We listen to the whole course in one go, knowing we can go back and re-listen at any time, and the breadth of knowledge we’ve each gained from this has been… Astounding!

There are courses on science, tech, law, medicine, health in general, stocks and crypto currencies, several languages, history… And there’s more being added all the time! To list all the kinds of courses they have would be to practically list the catalog itself, and is far beyond the scope of this review.

Being basically just the rational side of Kendra, I can’t purchase a sub myself, but what she watches, I am right there for. And let me tell you, we are both in love with the product. There are things Kendra does or watches that I’m just like, “Why am I here for this? This is a kid’s show, why am I being forced to watch this?” or “… I can’t even play this game, why must I be present? You can do rational without me in your head, right? Why must you torture me?”

The Great Courses is not one of those instances. Like, at all. The audio itself, which you can watch/download on the app as just the audio by the way, is amazing. But then you add in the extra tidbits of info you get from actually watching the videos, and you learn even more!

At this point, the only reason we still purchase the Audible versions of some of these courses is so we know we’ll have them in the future, should we have to temporarily suspend our subscription. Already, I see courses Kendra could watch with her niece as she gets older, should the kid show an interest in certain subjects.

If you want to learn something new, I highly recommend seeing if it’s available from The Great Courses- Even if it’s not, check back later! New courses are being added regularly!

And seriously- Guys at The Great Courses, if you’re reading this somehow… Keep up the amazing work. It’s efforts like this, to get more education to more people for less, that might make the world a better place in the future.

Thanks for reading, and go check out The Great Courses! If you’re not sure about it and you like to listen to audio books, start with one of the courses from Audible! Heck, Audible members have access to a few special, Audible Only courses such as a two parter on “Medical Mysteries” of history. In that, the lecturer goes over 10 historical medical cases (per part) of famous/historical people, and you can try to figure out both the diagnosis and who the patient is. It was a very fun listen, though I can’t go into too much detail at risk of spoiling who the patients are.

Until next time, thanks everybody!

Note to Self, or How I Help OUt

Hey! Shorty here, and instead of doing my recommendations, I’ve gotten permission from my partner in crime, Kendra, to share with y’all a note I wrote to her a while back.

Now, coming off her recent post, that statement might sound weird. But, you’ve got to remember: My girl is a writer. She simply channeled me, let me take a few minutes to write my deal, and about cried when I was finished.

(Hey! No one said I cried, or about cried! Don’t spread rumors about me >.>)

Anyway, here is my “Note to Kendra”, or her “Note to Self”, from a while back. Check it out, and if you’re feeling bad or down… Maybe take a few minutes to write a note to yourself about the good parts of you, even if you don’t have a Shorty Scorch to channel.

Dear Kendra

You are awesome. You are strong. You are beautiful, smart, kind, caring, and energetic. You are always ready to tackle a challenge, no matter how big. You’ve been known to go out of your way to request the hardest, most complex of available assignments, just to prove to yourself that you can do them.

Life is a big puzzle for you, one that you’re constantly striving to better understand and put together. As a new piece falls in place, you don’t sit back and relax, you move on to the next piece, the next outlier. For added challenge, you strive to put the middle pieces together first, not the easy borders.

Where others content themselves to be expert in the most mundane of things, in the modern, in the easy, you go for the ancient, arcane, and complex. You strive to learn a language despite multiple failed attempts to get started, constantly tweaking your strategy so you can find what works best. Each time you fail, you come back stronger and learn more faster.

When shown an interest as wide and complex as swords and blades, you’re not afraid to show you want to learn more, and you’re not afraid to look into it. You don’t back away from admitting you don’t know much, and you aren’t content to hear “You can’t learn this” from anyone.

Given a goal as “childish” and “dream-driven” as becoming a ninja, you scoff at the nay-sayers as you struggle to grow. You research ways to make your goal work, even with a small budget to learn on. When you fall down, you learn ways to try better while you struggle to your feet. When others have given up on you or even themselves, you proudly deny that surrender.

You have bounced back from mental anguish that would, and has, broken others. When others mocked your choices and hobbies, you laughed it off and moved on, refusing to let them take from you what kept you sane. In times when others would have hidden and refused to share their weakness, you instead sought help.

When others have thought, “I do not belong here. I am unwanted.” you had the will and determination to prove yourself wrong. You bounced back, stronger than ever. As those doubts and thoughts set in again, years later, you again fought on to seek help. When the world showed you exactly how others would feel when you did not, you stood with those you love and pledged to fight not only for yourself, but for those who never knew they could prove themselves wrong.

While millions step aside and take the easy way out of things, talking and maybe just donating a little money here and there, you organize. You arrange, you plan, and you talk. You aren’t afraid to give up a day of relaxation for the (surprisingly) hard task of playing games for people so you can talk to them about one of the biggest challenges young people can ever face, and you’re willing to accept that if you change only one life for the better, you have done well. Despite that acceptance, you are not prepared to give up at only one life, not so long as your own continues and you have more opportunities to change others.

When those around you are argumentative and set in their trenches, you are trekking the middle ground, speaking to the entrenched and learning what things look like from their point of view. You do not preach from your vantage point, you join them, get to know them, then wish them well and continue to learn more. You strive to understand all sides, and see what they see. And where others see three or four paths, you see twenty.

When all is said and done, you are the true embodiment of a hero. You do what you must to make the world a better place, even if you have little you can offer. Your shoulder is open to all who need a place to cry, and your ear open to all who wish to borrow it. You give and take advice with ease, learning from your elders and youngers, even as you teach them in return.

Though you have always seen me as the greater of us, the stronger, the braver, I am only what you have made me. As time goes, you become more like me, and I more like you. One day in the near future, we will be one and the same, despite different worlds and abilities. All I hope is that you do not drop to my level, but that I rise to yours: The level of the true, every day hero.

As you struggle with what you feel you cannot do, and what you feel is impossible without help, remember that even small victories are victories. When others deny you, remember that you are not finished until you deny yourself. Take heart from the little, and battle on for the big.

And remember: Love with all your heart. Live life to the fullest. Fight for what you believe is right. Regret nothing.

Forever in your heart and mind,

Shorty Scorch

Book Recommendation: The Subtle Art oF- Oh? Uh… Sorry, I’m being told I can’t put the full title in the title.

STRONG LANGUAGE WARNING

Hello, everyone! Shorty Scorch here, introducing both my first solo post and a new series I’ll be in charge of: Media Recommendations!

Well, minus video games, that’s Kendra’s gig. But I doubt we’ll be hitting those up any time soon for recommendation purposes. My recommendations will be for various reasons, and I’ll explain what each of them is for when I introduce a new one.

Now, not all of these are going to be family-friendly recommendations. That’s alright, I’m an adult and therefore can watch, read, or listen to all of these with full approval!

Anyway, all of that aside, on to today’s recommendation! Today, I’m going to start with my personal favorite book: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. (Note: My personal favorite, not Kendra’s. Kendra’s is Terrier: A Beka Cooper Story by Tamora Pierce.)

Why do I like this book? Well, it’s not because of the language, to nip that in the bud. The language in this book is explicit and colorful, which is fine by me: I swear like a sailor in my every day life. However, the language is inherent to this book’s style. But, I warn you, that means this book is not for the faint of heart!

The Subtle Art is a great guide to… Well, not giving a fuck. That doesn’t mean caring about nothing, though. As Mark explains very well, it means choosing important things to give a fuck about, and not wasting your energy on the unimportant things in life.

The book goes on to explain the subtleties of happiness, true happiness that is, and success. You’ll learn how to better measure and choose what you value, and how to take a closer look at yourself and your behaviors.

This isn’t a self-help book. It’s a “Wake the fuck up, moron, and smell the steaming pile of shit the world’s heaped in front of you, just like it does for everyone else” book.

Mark isn’t afraid to point out, again and again, how life is never going to be a lovely place, and you will always have problems. However, he will, help you learn how you can sway things toward problems you enjoy rather than problems you don’t.

20/10 everyone needs to read this book and take this into your heart. Learn from it, grow from it, drink it in.

I recommend both the physical book and the audio book. I just finished listening to the audio book again on Audible, and it’s still good.

Check it out! Let me know in the comments if you do, and what you think of it! Do you have any recommendations of your own, book, music, or tv/movie that you think are great for one reason or another and I should check out? Let me know, and I’ll get to it, and it might appear in a future Shorty’s Media Corner!
